Mark your calendars to attend a cover crop and soil health workshop at the Greene County Ohio fairgrounds on March 29, 2017.

Now is the time to start thinking about soil health because as the world’s population continues to grow, our soil resources do not. We must ensure that our soil resources are stable and sustainable to feed future generations.

Soil is an integral component of all life on Earth and is the foundation that supports farming, conservation and health in the 21st century. The quality of the soil also known as soil health is defined as the continued capacity of soil to function as a vital living ecosystem that sustains plants, animals, and humans. Key concepts of soil health and ecological soil management include protecting soil habitat; managing more by disturbing less; keeping soil covered, diversifying food and carbon sources for soil microorganisms; diversifying plant and animal communities; and growing living roots throughout the year. Cover crops increase soil organic matter, reduce erosion, suppress weeds, forage for nutrients, and reduce fertilizer costs.
