When proof of the marriage is needed, a certified copy of the marriage abstract can be obtained by writing to the Courts’ Marriage License Bureau or by appearing at the Marriage License Bureau in the Greene County Probate Court, 45 North Detroit Street, Xenia, Ohio, between the hours of 8:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. The cost of a marriage abstract is $2.00, cash or money order (no checks). Requests made by mail, must include a self-addressed stamped envelope for the marriage abstract to be returned. Usually, the marriage abstract can be obtained the same day it is applied for. For Marriages prior to October 1991 please contact the Record and Archives Department at (937) 562-6487.
Common law marriage was no longer recognized in the state of Ohio after October 10, 1991. The Probate Court has nothing to do with Common Law Marriage. If you need to provide verification of a Common Law Marriage that took place in Ohio, you need to contact the Social Security Administration in your area.
