The Family Relations Division
of Greene County Family and Children First offers mediation services
for parents in the midst of custody or visitation disputes.
An experienced mediator meets with both parents to assist them with identifying
and expanding areas of common ground, and to help them creatively
explore realistic options regarding their children's future care.
Through mediation, parents
are able to create their own mutually acceptable agreements
regarding issues that pertain to their children. Agreements are summarized in a written report which can
be reviewed by both parent's attorneys.
How to Participate in
Mediation:
-
If you have an active case in
either Greene County Domestic Relations or Juvenile Court, a judge or magistrate
can issue a court order instructing both parents to participate in mediation.
A parent can also talk with his or her attorney about how to petition the Court for mediation services.
-
If you have a past or current
case in either of the courts above, both parents can jointly choose
to seek mediation.
Will Mediation Really
Work?
Even if you have been through
or in the midst of a highly antagonistic custody dispute, mediation may
be extremely beneficial. The service does not assume that you and the other
parent are able to get along. Many high conflict couples are able
to successfully reach agreements. What is required is a willingness
to work at exploring viable options about your children's future care.
Keep
in mind, however, that mediation may not be appropriate for couples whose
relationship is affected by domestic violence. The mediator will make every
effort to schedule your session at a time convenient for both parents.
How Much Does It Cost?
A one time charge of $ 250 divided
between the parties, and payable either to the Greene County Clerk of Courts
or the Greene County Juvenile Court, entitles you to participate in the
program over a three month period. Payment is required at the first
session.
